Squamish Farmer's Market

Do any of you remember the cherries that drew you along Cleveland Avenue to the Farmer's Market on what is now the old Pac West Site near the brewpub? The cherries were the hallmark of the Walking Tall Movie that took over the downtown building and served as the casino set for a month in 2004. Cliff Miller was the driving force behind that initiative, just one of many positive things he's done for our community.

You had to "Make it! Bake it! or Grow it!" to have a booth at the market, a mantra still adhered to by today's diversity of vendors. And although it was a modest fair compared to the thriving market we have today, it was a great start and got the community envisioning the possibilities. Today, many of us make the Saturday morning pilgrimage to get our local veggies and yummy breads, and other delectable or creative treat. The Market has become "the" community social gathering; a chance to connect with neighbours and friends after a long work week.

This Saturday is the last day for the 2011 summer market. But because of the success of last year's 4 winter markets, the market will return Nov. 20th to West Coast Railway Heritage Park's CN Roundhouse.

Huge thanks to Carolyn Morris, the board and all the vendors. See you tomorrow when I'll be manning the Squamish Helping Hands Society's booth from 1:30-3:30pm. The market is helping us bring awareness to homelessness, food access and poverty issues in Squamish. It's these types of partnerships that make the difference and move us forward.

See y'all at the Market!
