Impact99-Social Media and the "New HR"

I spent a very productive, entertaining and informative day at Impact99 at Quest University. Impact99 is the "love child" of local HR guru Christine McLeod and her cohort at Impact People Practices. It covered a variety of topics in the New HR realm and delved into a multitude of social media opportunities. Without giving a play by play of the day, here are some take away "random" thoughts shared by some of the speakers, panelists and participants.

We are all media companies
Social Media is the intimacy revolution
Baby Boomers live to work, Gen X works to live [lifestyle], Gen Y needs purpose bigger than the job, needs to be motivated beyond job and lifestyle, Gen Y needs to have a purpose bigger than profit.
Baby Boomers are satisfied with a yearly review. Gen Y needs hands-on mentorship and feedback on a regular basis
We attract what we are, not what we want.
Organizations usually screw up when they stop listening
Social Media should be about listening not telling...listen carefully and add relevant value.
Organizations need social media guidelines and policies to protect staff, brand and customer but enable collaboration, communication, ideas, innovation...policies shouldn't lock people down but allow people to show leadership. Canada Post has a good example of an excellent social media policy.
Don't always be top down with employee training.
By 2020, 5 generations will be in the workforce...first time in history this will happen.
If wikipedia took 100 million collective hours to develop, just think what can be achieved with 100 billion hours...
Email is where information goes to die.

Of course there was much more said and learned but it would be a book not a blog.

  3. Hi Patricia.
Excited to hear you started a blog!

Are you thinking about posting our fun "recruiting" video exercise or will it be too embarrassing? :)
It was fantastic being your social media coach at @Impact99, although you knew just as much as me!
